Public transport discount for all 16-19-year-olds, for students on a youth education programme and for students in higher education

You can obtain a public transportation pass known as "Ungdomskort" if you meet the conditions, if you are 16-19 years old, a student on a youth education programme or a student on a higher education programme approved for SU.

The Ungdomskort provides a daily public transport discount from your residence to the educational institution. In addition, the Ungdomskort offers a number of other advantages. You can use the Ungdomskort to go by bus, train and metro. The Ungdomskort is subject to various conditions depending on whether you are 16-19 years old, a student on a youth education programme or a student in higher education.

All 16-19-year-olds may order an Ungdomskort without having to obtain prior approval. 16-19-year-olds may go directly to ordering the transportation pass in the transport companies' self-service system "Mit Ungdomskort" (my youth card). If you are a student on a youth education programme that is approved for an Ungdomskort, it is cheaper to buy an Ungdomskort for youth education programmes.

Students on a youth education programme

You may obtain an Ungdomskort for a youth education programme if:

  • the youth education programme entitles you to SU or is in the list of approved education programmes
  • you do not receive a transport subsidy under other schemes
  • the education is designed as full-time education
  • you are not in a paid internship or under an employability enhancement scheme at a production school
  • you are studying actively (the educational institution will decide whether the student is studying actively)
  • you are not in a paid internship
  • your daily travel is no more than 3½ hours each way

You may obtain an Ungdomskort for a higher education programme if:

  • you follow a higher education programme approved for SU
  • you do not receive a transport subsidy under other schemes
  • the education or the education programme is designed as full-time education
  • you are not in a paid internship
  • your daily travel is no more than 3½ hours each way

The price of an Ungdomskort depends on whether you are 16-19 years old, a student on a youth education programme or a student in higher education. You need to pay a basic amount per day (own payment).

Prices of the Ungdomskort

There are two ways to apply for the Ungdomskort:

  • If you are a student on a youth education or higher education programme, you need first to be approved for an Ungdomskort. You will be approved on ungdomskort.dk by logging in through MitID from the first page here at ungdomskort.dk (step 1). Once you have been approved, you will be transferred to the self-service system of the transport companies Mit Ungdomskort (step 2), where you are to order and pay for your Ungdomskort.

  • If you are 16-19 years old and not in any training or education, you may go directly to the transport companies' self-service system Mit Ungdomskort (from the first page of ungdomskort.dk - step 2), where you are to order and pay for your Ungdomskort.

If you do not have the opportunity to use a Youth Card, you can apply for other kinds of transportation discounts, when travelling between your place of residence and your place of education.

Mileage allowance is a support you can receive if your journey by public transport extends your travel time by more than two hours. To receive mileage allowance, you must meet the conditions for Youth Card and meet one of the special conditions for mileage allowance. Read more about Mileage allowance (in danish).

In very special cases, you can get your discount reimbursed to your personal bank account. You are responsible for applying for approval for a Youth Card and ordering it from your transport company in time. If you have had to buy a personal season ticket at full price or use your personal travel card, you can, in special cases be reimbursed of the discount that the Youth Card otherwise would have given you. However, you can only be reimbursed if you have applied for a Youth Card on time, but the application could not be completed due to extraordinary circumstances.

You also have the opportunity to apply for a ferry discount if you attend a youth education.

Your educational institution can guide you about the possibility of applying for mileage allowance, reimbursement and ferry discount.

You must have a Danish civil registration number and MitID to be able to apply for an Ungdomskort.

If you do not have a Danish civil registration number, you must complete an application form for a Danish civil registration number in connection with your application for an Ungdomskort. You must submit the completed form at your place of education together with a copy of your passport. You will then receive a letter from the Agency with your new Danish civil registration number.

Once you have received your Danish civil registration number, you can get MitID with your (danish or foreign) passport.
Then you can log on to the self-service solution and apply for eligibility for a discount and order an Ungdomskort.
